The Vologda specialists in dendrochronology and historians examined the wooden ship after conservation.

Head of the Dendrochronology Commission of the Vologda branch of the Russian Geographical Society, a leading expert of the Center for Wood Expertise Yuri Zhavoronkov, a 2nd-year student of the Institute of Social and Humanitarian Sciences of Vologda State University Darina Zhavoronkova, and a VSU law graduate Yaroslav Kharionovsky, visited the town of Vytegra. They continue their research into the history of the Onega wooden ship that dates back to the 17th century.

“It was necessary to inspect the ship’s remains after conservation, and take some wood samples, without inflicting much damage to the remaining parts. We also discussed a possibility of further research with the Vytegorsky District authorities” said Yuri Zhavoronkov.

Inspection of the ship’s frame after conservation showed that the wooden elements of the ship’s structure are in good condition. The artifact can be displayed in museum with appropriate protection such as a protective glass case.
