The Russian Foundation for Basic Research has allocated a grant of one million rubles to carry out scientific work.
It is a joint project of the Vologda State University, the Cherepovets State University, the Vologda Institute of law and economy and the Vologda laboratory of judicial examinations. The grant topic – “Russian nationalism in the linguo-legal aspect: pragmatics, dynamics of expertise”.
“The subject of research is the texts of right-wing and far-right figures, which can be called Russian nationalists. Chronological framework of the materials for study – from the beginning of the XX century to the beginning of the XXI century. These are speeches, leaflets and proclamations as well as modern books, blogs, social networks, and radio appearances by representatives of radical communities. The research will include methods of speech influence, argumentation, and methods of involvement in radical activities” said Sergey Gromyko, head of the research team, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of the Russian language, journalism, and communication theory at VSU.
The fundamental goal of the research is to determine the signs of Russian nationalism and its speech characteristics, and the applied goal is to improve the methods of forensic linguistic examination. Currently, there are several dominant methods of text research that clearly do not meet modern legal needs. The work within the grant will allow us to develop the most effective tools for correctly classifying a particular text as extremist materials.
