On February 2, 1943, the Red Army defeated the Nazi forces in the Battle of Stalingrad. The battle marked the turning point of the Great Patriotic War (1941 – 1945).
The Battle of Stalingrad began on July 17, 1942 and lasted for 200 days and nights. Over 2.1 million people, 2.1 thousand tanks, and 2.5 thousand aircraft fought in the territory of almost 100 thousand square kilometers.
Alexander Blank (1921 – 1985), Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at VSU, was a veteran of WW II. He was a participant of the Battle of Stalingrad, and even was the interpreter at the interrogations of Friedrich Paulus (the Nazi commander in chief) who had been taken a prisoner of war.
